From training thousands of clinicians working in a wide variety of healthcare settings across Australia (over the past 3+ years) I have compiled this list of the ‘Top 30 questions’ (& barriers) I encounter when training My Health Record. I am sharing it in the hope it helps others – especially Practice Managers and PHN support staff – who are tasked with an enormous change-management challenge when it comes to Digital Health.

After 26 years working in healthcare I still aim for the perfect world (perfect patients, staff, clinicians, technology and systems) but work with the real world. With this document I have tried to bring my voice; written my responses the way I answer when asked these questions when training.  If we wait for perfect we will never move forward. My answers are at times personalised and contain real stories. You may not agree with my responses and I am sometimes told by doctors my ideas (eg documentation, constantly clarifying with patients) can be a little “over the top” however I am always conscious of minimising risk for clinicians and patients.

Top 30 questions doctors ask about My Health Record (with Katrina Otto’s responses)

For formal My Health Record system rules and legislation please see www.myhealthrecord.gov.au  and www.nehta.gov.au.

Changes to Practice Incentive Payment for Digital Health for accredited general practices – (ePIP) are scheduled from 1 May 2016 – read the details here.

A national eLearning module should be made available very soon and we are also expecting a national Government patient communication campaign.

Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback. Let’s all continue to share and work together to improve our national Digital Health system for the benefit of both practices and patients.

With best wishes

Katrina Otto
