Pen CAT Plus
In last week’s blog we explored the topic of cancer screening data using MedicalDirector and Best Practice software. We discussed current limitations and offered free custom-made sql queries for advanced cancer screening searches.
This week we’re sharing Katrina Otto’s presentation created for North West Melbourne PHN Primary Care Conference (29 March 2017). Called ‘Data Aggregation for Business & Clinical Quality Improvement‘ using Pen CAT4, this presentation focused on analysing practice data using Pen CAT Plus and creating a culture of continuous data quality improvements.
Katrina’s 5 step plan for creating a ‘Quality Improvement’ practice culture:
- Start a formal team-based ‘QI Project’ for cleaning up practice data (design to meet the new PIP changes & RACGP Accreditation standards).
- Train your whole practice team so they completely understand how their clinical software works.
- Use data extraction tools for advanced analysis of practice financial & clinical data.
- Custom-design prompts to appear in your software eg. Pen topbar, to proactively remind staff to update clinical data and bill relevant item numbers.
- Share practice targets with the whole team and celebrate each success.
After all, our project goals are pretty worthy:
Improve the success of your practice

Improve the health of your patients.
